People are not upset with you; however, they are upset with how you make them feel about themselves. They are upset that their expectations have been shattered. They expected more from themselves and they expected you to be better than you are. The more important the role you play in their life, the deeper the effect will be.
Their decision-making process has been thrown into turmoil, they were wrong about you and now they are thinking,” how many other things have I been wrong about?” It’s all about trust.
It’s not the end of the world if you can’t trust somebody but when you lose trust in yourself, it can have long-lasting consequences for the future unless you can justify the decisions you made in the past.
Of course, justification is impossible, the best possible outcome is acceptance. You were younger and less experienced so you made a mistake that taught you a valuable lesson, one you would have preferred to learn another way, however, that is out of your control.
Acceptance means you follow these three steps;
- “It was what it was.”
- “It is what it is.”
- “It will be what it will be.”
Learn from your mistakes and move swiftly on to your next adventure.
