How You Use Your Talent Will Decide Who You Compete Against

Talent and attitude. There will always be somebody who’s faster than you unless you’re Usain Bolt and even he will be surpassed one day, there will be somebody who’s smarter than you, there will be somebody who’s wittier than you, there is somebody who’s considered a better writer than you, there is somebody who’s a better strategist than you, there is somebody who’s more generous than you, there’s somebody who’s got a more out-going personality than you, there’s somebody who’s more introverted than you, there’s somebody who has failed more times than you, there’s somebody who can drink more alcohol than you, there’s somebody who has more affairs than you, there’s somebody who is more aggressive than you, there’s somebody who knows more curse words than you, there is somebody who is more depressed than you, there is somebody who is fatter than you, there’s somebody who’s thinner than you, there’s somebody who believes in themselves more than you do. There is somebody who is more arrogant than you.

I fairly sure you get the picture, there will always be somebody who can accomplish more, be more and live more than you, but that’s where you’re lucky, you are not here to compete with those people, you are here to compete with the best possible version of yourself.

The best possible version of yourself will determine who you compete against; Usain Bolt has a talent for running very fast, he didn’t break the world record because of the talent he was given, he broke the world record because he worked out every day to improve the talent he was born with. If you’re a good runner but without the talent to be the best, you will enjoy years of fitness and good health because you like to run.

If you’re a talented gymnast like Nadia Comaneci, you will compete against the best and will go to the Olympics; if you’re flexible and enjoy the workout gymnastic routines provide, you will have the core strength that will last you a lifetime, you will be competing against nobody but yourself.

Talented writers compete against talented writers; people who like to write will write blogs. Talented boxers compete against talented boxers; bullies people will fight with anybody they think is weak.

The same theory applies to everything you do, your talent will decide who you compete against, it’s never a personal thing and if you focus on growing the talent you’ve been given, you too could be the Usain Bolt in your specialised area of excellence.

“If you continuously try to compete against superior talent, you will become bitter; if you focus on competing with yourself, you will become better.”
